What is the Vehicle Purchase Process for Foreigners in Turkey?
All official transactions regarding the purchase and sale of vehicles in Turkey are carried out in notary publics. As long as the seller and the buyer agree, they can trade in any notary public in any province of Turkey.
In the sale of a new vehicle, the necessary taxes are paid by the dealer from whom the vehicle will be purchased, and the vehicle can be registered at the notary public's offices with the sales document obtained from the dealer.
In case foreigners want to buy a second-hand vehicle, sales and transfers to foreign real and legal persons are made by notary publics on the basis of the registration document issued in the name of the vehicle owner, upon the presentation of the document stating that the vehicle has no tax debt. These sales are exempt from fees and stamp tax. Sales and transfers to be made by notaries are notified to the traffic registration directorate where the vehicle is registered on the same day.
Is It Necessary to Have Insurance in Vehicle Purchases?
In the registration of vehicles to be used in Turkey, which are sold and transferred to foreign real or legal persons, compulsory liability insurance must be taken out. The vehicle, for which a compulsory liability insurance policy is submitted, is registered and traffic documents and registration plate are given. The registration of the vehicle is notified to the tax office to which the vehicle is affiliated in terms of motor vehicle tax, within seven working days following the registration date.
Can Foreigners Take the Vehicle They Have Bought in Turkey Abroad?
Foreigners can take the vehicles they bought from Turkey abroad. If they want to take the vehicle they have purchased from Turkey abroad, the registration record of the vehicle is deleted upon the request of the foreigner and a temporary traffic certificate and plate are given for going abroad. The deletion of the vehicle's registration record is notified to the tax office to which the vehicle is affiliated in terms of motor vehicle tax, within seven working days following the deletion process. Foreign real and legal persons are allowed to take the vehicle abroad upon submission to the customs office of the document showing that the vehicle they purchased second-hand, issued by the relevant traffic registration directorate, is closed.
